During my residency at George Watson's College from September 2023 to June 2024, I made a series of cyanotypes in response to a collection of deteriorating print blocks from its archives. These artefacts provided a compelling lens to examine how economic forces shape social relations.
In a city profoundly influenced by its maritime history and inevitable ties to the transatlantic slave trade, George Watson's College is one of the few historic institutions in Edinburgh that commissioned a critical inquiry into its economic foundations. This investigation uncovered documents linking the founder’s economic ties to a cargo vessel used in the transport of enslaved people along the Ivory Coast.
